You should not lift the 23 by the mooring cleats, it should be slung around the hulls or lifted by the beams. Using a masthead sail you should definitely have running backs on the 23, even more so than the 27, because the mast is much lighter on more flexible. You will snap it if you don't install backstays. I have never rigged one to lower the mast while in the water, but it can be done. I know Randy Smyth set his up for this in the same situation, but I am not sure exactly how he did it. Perhaps you could reach him and see if he will design the system for you. Ron
