The original boom section which is oval with a primitive slide that serves as the downhaul. The next generation were the rectangular tubing with a fixed gooseneck and loose-footed main, then the later models have the smaller oval boom section with end castings and are fixed gooseneck with loose-footed boom as well. This would be the most desirable, as it is lighter and stronger and doesn't hurt as much if you hit your head on it. Of course the best thing is to go boomless and you eliminate all of the cost, hassle, and weight, but you have to buy a new mainsai.
